How to manage stress and your mental health while working in isolation

Wash your hands, stay in your bubble, cover your coughs, sterilise everything and anything you touch. We’ve been told the steps to protect our physical health from Covid -19 but what about our mental health and well- being? 

At WE Accounting we value and support Hauora practices and wellbeing in our workplace, families and communities. Now more than ever with uncertainty and anxiety at an all-time high – taking a balanced approach to our health that promotes physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing is going to help us during these tough times and prepare us to better respond to an ongoing crisis. 

Acknowledge the impact

Your home is your refuge and to suddenly be working with distractions can be difficult. As a result, it’s important to be as patient as it is not the time to expect perfection – take a deep breath and give yourself a break.

Keep up with your health

Stay hydrated, get some exercise, dance, sing out loud! or start each day with a gratitude practice whether its writing it down and saying it out loud in the mirror! There are a multitude of free online yoga and meditation videos. In fact, if you’re in the personal fitness business- now is the time to design a virtual workout for your clients.

Create a routine

There are factors beyond your control and sticking to a schedule will help you exert some control and familiarity BUT don’t be too rigid and do not overschedule yourself. Stick to a regular sleep pattern and practice good hygiene.

Get creative

Create a safe, uninterrupted space and some immediate time to do things that you know will relax you. Even better, link and reach out to collaborate with others and work independently with a common goal at the end to create something. This will have a positive effect on your well being and assist recovery

Manage your information intake

We are being bombarded with Covid-19 information and its impact on people all over the world. While its good to be informed, you are hereby given permission to switch off for a couple of hours. Schedule in your time to check breaking news or scroll through social media.

Power in connection

Seek productive and empathetic support by starting your own chat group of like-minded people that focus on a common goal whether its business, creative or community based. Remember we are all in the same boat and the chances someone else is feeling the same way and needs some positivity or a chat are pretty high right now.

Pay it forward

We’ve all seen the viral videos and the social media memes - people battling for supplies and next level kind of selfishness amongst some people. It’s a proven fact that acts of kindness and helping others will assist in our own recovery and support us to feel more connected and less alone. That means checking up on some of our elderly who might live alone or collecting food items for struggling families in your community.

Finally, in case you need to hear it from somebody – you have permission to be human and that means its perfectly normal and appropriate to feel anxious and lost but its important to know that you are NOT failing and instead focus intensely on your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing to help navigate your business through a crisis while taking care of your whanau and community.
