There’s an obvious pattern showing up in the data right now.
And I don't think anyone will be surprised by it
What The Numbers Say

Two stats in particular have been sitting with me:
- 69% of businesses are seeing profit growth of 10% or less
- 76% have limited or no cash reserves
Now on their own, you could brush these off.
“It’s just the economy.” “It’s been a tough couple of years.”
And yes… that’s true.
But when you put them together, something else starts to show.
What This Actually Means in a Business
It means there’s very little margin for error.
If profit growth is low… And cash reserves are low…
Then every decision needs more attention.
A slow month matters more. A lost client hits harder. An unexpected cost creates stress.
And sadly - It keeps the owner stuck in the business.
Because when things feel tight, what do we do?
We lean in more. We hold on tighter. We do more ourselves.
We tell ourselves:
“I’ll just push through this.”
"I'll do it, cos I know how"
"If I do it myself, I'll save money"
Where Owner Reliance Creeps In
This is where it connects back to something Eli and I talk about a lot.
Owner reliance.
Not as a concept… but as a lived experience.
Because when margins are tight, it feels risky to:
- delegate
- invest in systems
- build leadership
- step back
So instead… we stay close to everything.
And over time, the business becomes more dependent on us, not less.
The Hidden Cost in Today’s Environment
Now layer in what’s happening around us.
A tougher economy. Rising costs. AI changing how work gets done.
And suddenly, the businesses that rely heavily on the owner are the ones under the most pressure.
Because AI doesn’t replace strong businesses.
It replaces inefficient ones.
And the businesses that thrive in this environment are the ones that:
- are systemised
- are scalable
- don’t rely on one person to function
That’s what top performers are doing differently.
When One Person Leaves, You Feel It Everywhere
We had a moment in our business where this really hit home.
One of our team members left. They had their own group of clients, knew them well, had built strong relationships.
But they also had their own way of doing things.
A bit more manual than we would have liked… and a lot of it lived in their head.
When they left, we felt it straight away.
We didn’t fully know what had been done. What hadn’t been done. Who needed what.
There were no clear processes we could lean on. Nothing consistent the team could pick up and follow.
It felt messy. A bit chaotic, if I’m honest.
Clients started to feel it too. Frustration started to build.
And we found ourselves stepping right back in - answering questions, fixing things, trying to steady everything.
Not because we wanted to…
But because we felt like we had to.
To protect the clients. To protect the revenue.
And that was the moment it really landed for us.
We can’t build a business like this.
So we changed it.
We started documenting everything. Creating processes that weren’t just in someone’s head. Putting them somewhere the whole team could access.
And just as importantly… making sure they were actually followed.
Because that’s what started to shift things for us.
From a business that relied heavily on individuals… to one that could start to stand on its own.
The Shift That Changes Everything
The shift isn’t:
“Work harder to increase profit.”
The shift is:
“Build a business that performs without relying on you for everything.”
Because when you do that:
- profit improves
- cash becomes more predictable
- decisions feel less heavy
- you get space back
And your business becomes more valuable.
Becoming a Top Performer
Top-performing businesses don’t just focus on revenue.
They focus on how the business is built.
They:
- understand their margins
- build cash intentionally
- reduce reliance on themselves
- invest in the right systems and people
- use tools (including AI) to remove bottlenecks, not create more noise
They’re not necessarily working more.
They’re just working differently.
Something to Sit With
If your profit growth is slow… And your cash feels tight…
Is the answer to lean in harder?
Or is it time to build differently?
